Harish Salve,  India’s most expensive and one of the most famed lawyers has been a standout hero in India’s fight against Pakistan in Kulbhushan Jadhav at International Court of Justice, Hague.

Harish Salve, former Solicitor General of India, charges anywhere between 6 to 15 lakhs per appearance and his fees have been believed to reportedly skyrocket to 30 lakhs per day as well. Salve is well known for defending Mukesh Ambani‘s gas dispute against his brother Anil Ambani. Also, he is renowned for high profile cases such as winning Vodafone’s 11000 crore tax case against government in 2012 and also saving Salman Khan in famed hit-and-run case.

What is truly shocking is the amount charged by Harish Salve to argue India’s case on behalf of Kulbhushan Jadhav.

He charged just a rupee. Yea, you read it right, ₹ 1 for representing India at ICJ.

This case was a very emotive one for India. India’s argument was that the former-naval-officer- turned-businessman was in Iran, from where Pakistan had wrongly arrested him, accusing him of being a spy. On top of that, India was denied consular access to Kulbhushan Jadhav. Harish Salve, effectively argued on India’s behalf and the ICJ favoured the verdict in India’s side.

Smt. Sushma Swaraj, current External Affairs Minister of India and former Supreme Court lawyer shared a tweet as follows when a Twitterati questioned the government’s decision to choose Adv. Harish Salve for the job.

It is believed that Adv. Harish Salve voluntarily approached the government to fight the case and charge just ₹ 1.
